Job Summary

The Accountant is responsible for ensuring that all account maintenance, transaction processing, and reporting related to grant funding and general accounting are provided in a timely and accurate manner and in compliance with all applicable institutional, TBR, Federal, and State regulations, policies, and guidelines. The Accountant executes and audits complex accounting transactions utilizing sophisticated technology to provide professional services.

The Accountant works closely with the TCATs and is expected to provide a high level of customer service to all institutions served. This position will have the opportunity to work remotely but with periodic visits to the TBR System Office (Nashville, TN).

Job Duties

  • 30% - General Accounting • Requests, draws, and transfers state appropriations for the System Office and TCATs • Manages and reconciles payment, operating, imprest, investment, and fixed asset accounts • Maintains and updates the general ledger • Performs bank reconciliations for institutions • Maintains and updates the chart of accounts upon receipt of necessary approvals • Processes journal entries and deposits • Assists with end of fiscal year data collection for encumbrances and accounts payable and ensures that these are properly recorded in the financial records prior to preparation of financial statements - (Essential)
  • 20% - Reporting • Processes month-end close, quarterly review, and year-end close • Prepares financial statements and specialized accounting reports • Completes all accounting related tax reporting • Ensures accurate and timely preparation of all annual and ad hoc reports on behalf of the TCATs and System Office - (Essential)
  • 15% - Audit Support & Compliance • Assists supervisor in audit responses, including responses required for any IRS inquiry • Ensures the integrity of the internal financial control structure of TBR and provides effective financial monitoring and reporting services • Monitors accounting systems for internal controls, accuracy of information, and account classification • Oversees disposal of records and ensure that the business office follows TBR guidelines and policies - (Essential)
  • 10% - Grant Accounting • Draws down Federal and State grant funds • Manages grant accounts • Completes and reviews Perkins IV Grant detailed billing documentation • Processes all grant accounting transactions, including grant close outs • Runs, reviews, and certifies effort report for grant administration - (Essential)
  • 10% - Fixed Assets • Maintains and reconciles all capitalized fixed asset records • Prepares the Annual Report schedules for fixed assets • Coordinates the annual inventory of Capitalized Fixed Assets - (Essential)
  • 5% - Budgeting • Assists in set-up and review of working budgets • Assists supervisor in departmental budgeting - (Essential)
  • 5% - Customer Service • Fields employee questions and researches accounting concerns • Works cooperatively and effectively with other departments • Provides consultative services to TCAT institutions based on functional area expertise in support of accounting related best practice implementation - (Essential)
  • 5% - Other Duties • Performs additional duties as assigned - (Marginal)

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field and a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
• Experience working in accounting or auditing in a college, university, or state government
• Experience within a shared services operating environment
• Experience in accounting or auditing at a TBR institution
• Experience with Banner or similar ERP system

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• In-depth knowledge of college and university accounting, budgeting, and NACUBO standards
• In-depth knowledge of grant accounting, budgeting, and reporting requirements
• Knowledge of financial reporting requirements of GASB, FASB, AICPA, and the State of Tennessee
• Broad knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines
• A willingness and passion to learn new hardware and software systems that are consistent with duties
• Ability to effectively analyze data and inquiries, think critically, and make appropriate decisions
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work as part of a team or work alone without close supervision
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
• Ability to understand customer needs and provide quality service
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in compliance rules and regulations, including HIPAA and FERPA guidelines on the disclosure of information
