Job Description

This position is a member of the Financial Services Team and works closely with the Vice President of Finance & Administration to ensure the accuracy of the College’s general ledger and budget development. The Controller manages and is responsible for the Business Office operations of the College that include accounting and financial reporting, treasury management, budgeting, accounts payable, receivables, and receipts & operating expenses. The Controller assures compliance with all federal, state and local requirements; ensures safeguarding of college assets through internal controls; oversees accounting & budgeting for grants; and provides administrative accounting and budgeting support to all College departments.

Under the direction of the Vice President, the Controller will coordinate with the College’s external auditors to prepare the annual audit. The Controller has direct contact with executive officers, deans, directors, faculty, staff, and the general public, as well as with the college Foundation, Illinois Community College Board, external auditors, and various local, state, and federal agencies. The Controller provides innovative solutions for emerging financial management needs, as well as timely strategic decision support for the college leadership team, Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders. This position will require a background and credit check.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and a minimum of five years of experience in an accounting field. A minimum of two years in a leadership and supervisory position.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

Strong verbal, written, analytical, interpersonal and presentation skills.

Ability to work independently and to evaluate strategies regarding cash management and financial planning.

Ability to contribute as a team member.

Ability to understand and implement accounting standards in a regulated environment. Strong project management and decision-making skills.

Advanced Excel/spreadsheet software skills; intermediate Word/word processing skills; proficiency with other Microsoft Office software such as Outlook & PowerPoint, as well as proficiency using a financial Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that includes some query software or other report writing software. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Understanding of local, state and federal funding streams and regulations and a demonstrated knowledge of applicable GAAP, GASB, A-110 and A-133 guidelines would be preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

A Certified Public Accountant or Masters’ Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business is preferred. Experience with fund accounting in an institution of higher education is preferred. A shown level of progressive leadership experience in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.

Physical Demands

Operate standard office equipment such as phone, computer, and calculator on a frequent basis.

Receive, process, and provide visual and verbal information.

Provide timely response to externally/internally imposed conditions and deadlines.

Respond to concurrent, multiple, non-related issues.

Work effectively under pressure due to deadlines, due dates, etc.

This is a 40 hour per week position with normal hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Summer hours may vary.

This position will require in-district travel or other assigned activities and duties. Travel to conferences and meetings beyond the College district is likely.

Salary Pay Grade E-15 Minimum Starting Salary $81,033.48 (Anticipated Starting Salary $95,000-$100,000)
