CCBO was founded in 1983 as the National Council of Community College Business Officials. An Affiliated Council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) since 1984, the Association has been serving the needs of business officers nationwide through conferences, leadership programs, professional development, and networking opportunities.

CCBO also provides networking opportunities, and timely trend and demographic information for business officers representing community colleges and community college system offices in the US and in Canada. The association works to help business officers prepare for successful professional roles in the business and service enterprise of the community college.
