Dr. Luke Barber
Professor Emeritus of DCCCD's Richland College, philosopher, author, and humorist

Luke Barber has been Professor of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Richland College in Dallas, Texas for thirty-Seven years. He has received numerous awards for his teaching, including the Miles Production Laboratories’ Award for Teaching Excellence, given to the outstanding professor in the Dallas County Community Colleges. He has been also named a Minnie Stevens Piper Professor, an annual recognition of the top 12 professors in all Texas colleges and universities. Dr. Barber is a philosopher, storyteller, author, lecturer, and consultant who writes and speaks on a variety of topics.

Session Description: “Work Like Your Dog: The Key to Success at Work”

How often have you heard people complain that they have been “working like a dog?” In this laugh-filled and playful presentation Luke will discuss the ways in which our lives at work can become joyful, happy, and much more productive if we take seriously the lessons that our dogs can teach us about work and working with others.

Dr. Walter G. Bumphus, Ph.D. is President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. From 2007 to January 1, 2011, Dr. Bumphus served as a professor in the Community College Leadership Program and as chair of the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. He also held the A. M. Aikin Regents Endowed Chair in Junior and Community College Education Leadership.

Dr. Sanford C. Shugart
President of Valencia College, recipient of the prestigious Aspen Award

Dr. Sanford C. “Sandy” Shugart serves as the fourth president of Valencia College, one of the nation’s largest and most celebrated two-year colleges. Valencia, the second largest producer of graduates in the country, is especially well regarded for its learning centered approach to higher education, its economic development programs, and its outstanding academic programs. Dr. Shugart came to Valencia after serving as president of North Harris College in Texas and Vice President of the North Carolina Community College System. He received his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a published poet and songwriter and enjoys life with Jane, his wife of thirty years, and their four children in Orlando, Florida.
